What’s Your Mission?

Every music studio knows what they do. That’s easy-teach music. Every studio knows how they do it. But do you know WHY you do it? That’s the essense of a mission statement. What, how and why. The WHY is the hard part. It’s not so obvious. In this episode I dig into how to write a mission statement for your music studio.

Why Do You Teach Music?

The real question to ask is what benefit do you hope to bring to kids through music. If you look at some of the worlds top brands their WHY is never about the product. It’s always about the benefit. It’s always about a lofty dream or goal. The essensce of your music studio is found in your WHY.

Write a mission statement for your music studio

The following are some top brands and their mission statements. They all follow the what, how and why formula.  I took some artistic liberties and wrote a mission statement for the Fab Four and a ficticious music studio.

Coca Cola

(Our mission is) To refresh the world in mind, body and spirit. To inspire moments of optimism and happiness through our brands and actions

What do you do: refresh the world
How do you do it:  through our brands and actions
Why do you do it:  to inspire moments of optimism and happiness

Starbucks

(Our mission is) to inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.

What do you do: (make drinks)
How do you do it: one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time
Why do you do it: to inspire and nurture the human spirit

The Beatles

Our mission is to blend classical, jazz, the avante garde and pop into pocket sized symphonies that inspire a generation to achieve the impossible.

What do you do: (write songs)
How do you do it: classical, jazz, the avante garde and pop
Why do you do it: (to) inspire a generation to achieve the impossible

Billy’s Bongo Bonanza

Our mission is to pass on the ancient traditions of drumming to tomorrow’s leaders. Our group drumming classes connect children to a community and gives them the confidence to realize their potential.

What do you do: Teach drums
How do you do it: drum classes
Why do you do it: Connect children to a community and gives them the confidence to realize their potential.
